About an inch of the end of the shifter cable that attaches to the nut on the shifter mechanism on the hub fell off, much to my surprise, this after my longest ride to date. I've had no mishaps and can see no reason why this happened. The nut is still in place without the excess cable.
Please advise.

Ivan, this is from Dave: It is possible that the cable was bent towards the chain so that as you rode your StreetStrider, the chain, as it went around, may have worn away at the cable enough that it eventually broke off. Does your shifter still work? The cable end above the nut is not necessary for shifter function. However, if the shifter does not work and gear #4 doesn't line up correctly, it is possible that the cable was pulled through the clamping screw. In this case, view this video for Microshift shifters:

Watch this video if you need to replace the shifter cable on a StreetStrider ETX 8r with a Microshift shifter.

As far as I can tell the shifter still works. I'll take a longer ride tomorrow to be sure.
